To coincide with today’s launch of Apogee WebApproval, we speak with our Pre Press Manager Jamie Awford to understand the reasons behind this new system.

WHY ARE WE CHANGING?

Our incumbent Apogee Portal is built on architecture which is 12 years old and even though the user-interface has received updates over the years, it is still based on old technology. As with many other websites, it has relied heavily on 3rd party applications to run. Primarily, these are Java and Flash, provided by separate vendors (Oracle and Adobe).

The results of having these applications running within the website mean we have to constantly update should there be any security-risks etc. Last year, the main Internet browser vendors (Microsoft, Mozilla, Apple and Google) decided enough was enough and agreed together to drop the support for Java in their future releases of browsers – that time is now upon us. This means any sites reliant on Java will no longer work (as we will experience with Apogee Portal) so we are at a time when we HAVE to change.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

AGFA have re-created the new WebApproval system using the HTML5 coding which means the site runs purely within the browser and also enables it to be viewed on Android and IOS tablets/phones etc.

Aside of the change having to happen to enable us to continue to have files supplied via an online workflow, there are many advantages including:

• Security
• Tablet support
• Drag-and-drop of files straight from desktop
• De-cluttered interface
• Any updates in the infrastructure of the site will no longer have to work with other software suppliers so will be smaller updates and more frequent.

WILL I STILL RECEIVE ALL THE AUTOMATED EMAILS?

Yes, your account will default for you to receive the automated emails however, you can customise which emails you want to receive under your profile.

WILL MY LOG-IN DETAILS BE THE SAME AS APOGEE PORTAL?

Your account will be re-created and an automated email sent with your new username, you will need to set your own password from the automated link.

WILL WEBAPPROVAL SHOW ME PREFLIGHT REPORTS?

Yes, the new WebApproval system is also intuitive enough to highlight the areas of non-conformance on the pages.

YOU MENTION TABLET SUPPORT, WHAT CAN BE DONE ON A TABLET?

Placing files, viewing proofs and approving / rejecting pages can be done from your tablet. Handy if you’re on the go and need to hit approval deadlines.

DO I NEED SPECIAL SOFTWARE TO RUN WEBAPPROVAL?

No, WebApproval works purely within the browser so there’s no need to download additional software.
